Relationship Challenges Showing up after the Holidays

This time of the year is the most challenging for relationships.  We have the highest rate of marriages breaking up after the holidays, and it seems to be a time of stress for most families.

•    lack of communication of real needs that are unfulfilled
•    lack of expression of feelings
•    being unable to reach compromises that take into consideration what is best for the relationship, instead of wanting to be ‘right’ and make the other ‘wrong’
•    lack of gratefulness for who they are and what they already have

You don’t get attached too easily, and, to wit, you’re not necessarily looking for something long-term right now. That’s a bigger asset than you know. Check out the full three-part video piece I made a few years ago for my online exhibit and gallery installation - “unMade Movie”. It has traveled to Russia, Toronto, Chicago, Germany and Italy.

The entire work focuses on gender, the role of femininity vs. feminism, role vs. persona, a movie unmade, of different pop culture archetypes women in cinema populate. The video, in particular, focuses on the fluidity of the self, a melting off of gender, identity, into piece where toys melt, mold and float in shimmering liquid. Its hypnotic and strange, yet lovely. Erotic in a different way.

The full exhibit includes photo stills arranged in “type” or “mood” galleries - The Blonde, The Showgirl, The Redhead. There are also production notes cataloguing the first few years of this project. Found in recent research is the Karezza Method - a set of guidelines for sex, written by the first women to graduate from medical school in the US - Alice B. Stockham, MD, who also happened to be a Quaker. In her book, “Karezza, Ethics of Marriage”, she writes of her belief in “a theory of conjugal life, in which there is a love communion between husband and wife from which results a mastery of the physical”. An interview with Shantam Nityama by Rebecca Walker

RW: Tell me a little bit about what you do and how you came into this work.

SN: I started out twenty years ago doing bodywork as a component of
spiritual mentoring. Basically, I wanted to help people integrate what
they knew spiritually into their everyday life. To have knowledge of a
spiritual perspective and to implement that knowledge into your daily
living are two completely different things. As people came to me for
spiritual instruction, I began to realize most of them had deep
repression that was not allowing them to accumulate the energy needed
to develop spiritually. Each time I investigated the source of this
stagnation, most of my discoveries revolved around the person’s
sexuality and/or sexual energy channels. How the person is handled as a
child or as a young adult around sex or sexuality related issues
impacts them in their adulthood. As a young person the amount of shame,
guilt, confusion, ignorance, and fear tied to the sexual energy was
overwhelming.

It is sex that brings us onto the planet. We must realize that if we have difficulty with the primal energy that brought us here, then we are going to be mired in self-hatred and be confused about the very thing that has brought us into being. (more…)

A friend of mine has started a blog I think every man should read. The Zipper Chronicles offer advice to men seeking an alternative to the “hit it and quit it” mentality that often sinks the NYC relationship faster than a cop can dunk a donut.

With entries like How To Behave At Work - The Office Party, How To Behave At Work - Conventions, and What About…Happy Endings?, a girl like me can learn a lot from the mental machinations a man will go through to rationalize just about any sexual conduct. The emscee, as my buddy likes to go by, really breaks down the arguments and offers saner options, hoping to appeal to the nobler part of men’s hearts.

Will he make a dent? I hope so. We need more emscee and men who think about it why a piece of ass isn’t always the right or even safe option. And we all need pointers on how to act at work, especially in these casual clothed, open-toed environments we find ourselves in these days.
